Who We are |
Born of a "stu" team in 2003, St’ Keya (pronounced Stick-Eye-Ya) is a
fun filled, enthusiastic and eclectic group. Together with a few
"youngsters," our "age gifted" boat enjoys the spirit of competition.
St’ Keya, a Coast Salish name, literally translates to "Wolf of the Sea". The name was chosen to honour the Coast Salish First Nations people on whose waters St’ Keya paddles.
Our powerful logo was designed by local first nation’s artist Butch Dick. It incorporates dragon, wolf and man. The logo, with our distinctive orange coloured apparel, makes us hard to miss.
A survey (while having a beverage) once determined our average age to be over 60(The abstainers were few enough to become statistically insignificant.)
One of our members wisely pointed out that each year we will be further over 60. Our eldest is currently 71 and our youngest 50 , qulifying us as a Grand Masters team
The St’ Keya team spirit and camaraderie is powerfully linked to it's
origin, as nearly two thirds of the team have been in some way connected with
the Island
Breaststrokers dragonboat teams who are truly an inspiration to
all.

What we do
|
We practice three times a week
starting in late March.
In previous years St’ Keya competed in a number of dragononboat
festivals throughout British Columbia. These have included the Nanaimo, Richmond,
Vancouver
Island Victoria, Kelowna , ALCAN (Vancouver) and The Northern California Festvials.
We will be racing in the inaugural Grand Dragons Event at the CCWC Worlds in Toronto in August
As well as racing hard we participate fully in all beer garden and
festival retail related activities.
In the off season team members keep their hand in through Outriggering,
dryland training and Voyageur Canoeing. The highlight of the latter is
a marathon paddle across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Port Angeles
under the auspices of VCKC.
In the off season we have a meeting or two to plot strategy and work to
eliminate any possible rules that may arise. We have been known to have
a beverage at these meetings.
